Young Motor Insurance UK - A Review

How to get better value young motor insurance quotes

There are a few obvious things that you can do in this context (like comparing lots of quotes) but there's plenty that isn't necessarily obvious yet can have a major impact on the price that you pay for your young motor insurance policy. Clearly, the more you can do to reduce costs, the better. We therefore outline here some of the key measures to reduce the price of young motor insurance cover.

Hopefully, you will have bought a modest car in a low car insurance group. The old system of the 1-20 rating has now been replaced by a 1-50 rating (provided by Thatchem). You should aim to buy a car that's less than group 10 and, clearly, the lower the better. We tend to recommend 'city runner' type cars such as a Corsa or Clio. It's even worth considering a change of car as this can save you thousands over two or three years.

It's also worth increasing your excess payment, but only if that amount is acceptable and practical should you be required to pay it in an accident. We also advise considerable pragmatism in determining must-have policy features. If you're under 25, it's not a good time to insit on a policy that includes an automatic courtesy car, for example. Free courtesy cars are relatively costly to insurance companies and if you're at higher risk of needing to use one  - as young drivers are - its an avoidable expense.

Some young people choose to allow an older person, generally a parent, to 'front' their car insurance. That is, they allege that the older person is the primary driver. Insurance companies are wise to this type of fraud and it could invalidate your cover; so must be avoided. It's also essential to steer clear of third party only car insurance as this does not include cover for personal or passenger injury or losses if you are at fault for the accident.

You can, however, include an older person as a second driver and, perhaps surprisingly, this will usually decrease the premium.

Security improvements also merit attention. Add a Thatchem-approved security device to your car if you can and also review your overnight parking arrangements. If you can park off-road or in a garage, then do so.

Some young people don't use their car a great deal, or simply take short trips. If so, then capping you annual mileage will save money.

Because comparing quotes is helpful, then a price comparison site is a good resource to use. Do check over the cover before pruchase, however, the cheapest may not be adequate for your needs.
